To be fair, someone else came up with it on one 
of the Usenet groups dedicated to the Legion several years ago . . .

I figured there were probably some here who would 
get it right off, while others would go "Huh?", 
so I decided to provide the links.  (And yes, 
somewhere I have, or at least I used to have, a 
copy of _Superboy_ #98 from which the portion of 
the page shown at the second link was 
reproduced.  And while the above is indeed a 
joke, I recall another Legion story (originally 
published in _Adventure Comics_ #338, which I 
also have had since 40-odd years ago when it cost 
all of 12¢) where Matter-Eater Lad enlists 
Element Lad's help with a Mother's Day gift for his mother . . . )
