It's hard to believe that the USA is not totally covered with
transmission lines. Brazil, about the size of the connected
component of the USA + 1/2 Alaska, is almost entirely connected
(such that a pane in a transmission line 5000 km away causes a
blackout here... or so they say).
BTW, recently ethanol replaced hydro as the 2nd most important
energy source here.
