Well folks, last time I posted, I screwed up royally. I was equating
kilowatt-hours with kilojoules, and the result is a 3600x inflated figure.
Revised table:
Energy density of petrol (per kilogram) 45,000.00 kJ / kg
Density of petrol 737.22 kg / m^3
Energy density of petrol (per litre) 33,174.90 kJ / L
Metric/imperial conversion factor 0.26417 gallons / L
Energy density of petrol (per gallon) 125,580.66 kJ / gallon
Kilojoules per kilowatt-hour 3600 kJ / kWh
Cost per kilowatt-hour (hypothetical) $0.01 $ / kWh
Cost per kilojoule (hypothetical) $0.000002778 $ / kJ
Price per gallon (hypothetical) $0.35 $ / gallon
Obviously this is vastly different! (but remember these figures assume 100%
conversion efficiency, and there will clearly be losses; they also ignore
attendant ecological question marks.)
Regards
Curtis
